On March 3, 1856, De Penning petitioned the Government of India for the grant of exclusive privileges for his invention under the newly enacted Act VI of 1856, which provided for the protection of inventions. His petition was the first to be filed under this Act, marking a significant milestone in India’s intellectual property history. The grant was officially numbered as No. 1 of 1856, making it the first patent ever issued in India.
