The mission aimed to evangelize the indigenous Chamorro people. Despite facing challenges and resistance, Calungsod remained steadfast in his commitment to spreading the Christian faith.

Challenges and Persecution

The missionaries encountered significant opposition from certain local leaders who were influenced by rumors and misconceptions about the new faith. One such leader, Chief Matapang, was particularly hostile. Influenced by a Chinese exile named Choco, who falsely claimed that the missionaries’ baptismal water was poisonous, Chief Matapang became vehemently opposed to the Christian teachings. This misinformation led to widespread fear and distrust among the Chamorro people.

Martyrdom

On April 2, 1672, while attempting to baptize a child in the village of Tumon, Calungsod and Father San Vitores were confronted by Chief Matapang and his followers. Despite the imminent danger, Calungsod chose to stay by Father San Vitores’ side. The missionaries were attacked, and Calungsod was fatally wounded. His unwavering faith and dedication to his mission led to his martyrdom at the tender age of 17.

Canonization and Legacy

Pedro Calungsod’s life and sacrifice did not go unnoticed. In 2000, Pope John Paul II declared him Blessed, and in 2012, Pope Benedict XVI canonized him as a saint. He became the second Filipino saint after Saint Lorenzo Ruiz. His feast day is celebrated on April 2, the anniversary of his martyrdom.
